For all of the martial arts and self defense training programs being offered all over the world, the sad fact is that the majority of these self defense courses are limited to teaching students step-by-step techniques, rather than the knowledge that will allow them to be the most effective - regardless of how many techniques they actually know!
This article answers the question that is asked by the most astute students: "How do I learn to think like a police officer, FBI agent, or other self defense and combat expert?" "I want to think like you guys. How do I do that?"
And the reality is that the ability that these students are asking about - the ability to know...
- What to do
- When to do it, and...
- How to know that something is going to happen before it does...
...simply does not happen overnight, or after only a few classes. As much as you want to be a Black Belt right now, or to be able to be invincible against a hoard of "bad guys," the reality is that you are going to not only have to put in a lot of time, effort, and hard work, but you're going to have to focus on the right things in getting there.
Otherwise, all you'll have is a bunch of knowledge, and very little ability.
So, how do you begin to think about real-world self defense like an expert - like the men and women who have jobs that require them to "get it right the first time?" You begin by...
Knowing what to look for - and then training, developing, and increasing your level of awareness so that you are able to recognize the danger signals BEFORE the assailant can make his move.
You then learn effective methods for controlling, escaping from, and directing the situation so that you have the greatest advantage.
And, finally... you learn effective techniques for protecting yourself against the most probable attacks that you are likely to deal with.
I know how easy this sounds, but again... it's not!
If it were easy, neither I, nor any other self defense expert, online or off, would have a reason to teach what we do. Because... you and everyone else would already know!
Self defense is a very deep and complex subject. Don't ever let anyone else - including these ya-hoos on the internet, with their, "Drop any attacker in 2 seconds," scams - tell you any different! There are, literally, a ton of variables, options, and situations where you could find yourself. And, if you get it wrong, you don't get to "start over."
Remember, the above guidelines are only offered as such. They are not meant to be the "be all, to end all" of your lessons. Nor, should they be seen as the exact order in which to learn things in your training. The reality is that, to learn how to think and act like professionals and experts do every day, you are going to have to put in the time, effort, and yes, money to learn what you must...
...if you are going to actually have a chance at surviving a real life attack with more than luck and the grace of whatever force in the Universe you believe in.
As one of my teachers told me way back in the day...
"Somewhere in the world, someone is training to hurt people. And, if you are not training, (or not training correctly), and you meet him...
...you will lose!"
Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.
