When I started doing research for this article I had no idea of the danger that nurses were in on a day to day basis. Here are a few facts. Almost two thirds of all hospitals are in areas that are above average or average high crime. This fact from the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety. So they work in high risk areas.
Because of increased stress due to low staffing ratios and rampant drug and alcohol abuse, assaults, stabbings, shootings, rapes and beatings are all on the rise inside hospitals.
On average, workplace violence reports that there are nearly 1,000 murders and 1.5 million assaults every year with two thirds of them happening in healthcare settings. Nearly 50% of the nursing population is affected by violence in the workplace. That my friends is a very scary statistic.
Hospitals are putting procedures in place to handle rage and violence with visible security personnel, security cameras and equipment and classes teaching nurses basic self-defense techniques.
Self defense weapons like stun guns are being carried by nurses more often than not. For inside the hospital that may be perfectly good, but they face great risk outside the hospital because of the neighborhood areas that they're located in. Conditions like darkened stairwells inside the hospital, working late shifts and walking to the parking garage that may or may not be covered and probably is poorly lit at that are all breeding grounds for crime.
Self defense products are nonlethal by nature and offer the user an opportunity to get away from an assailant and a dangerous situation.
Perhaps the best self defense product for a nurse to carry in her purse is the Mace pepper gun. It shoots out seven 25 foot shots of oleoresin capsicum better known as OC spray. This spray causes intense pain, tearing of the eyes so bad that they shut, choking, coughing and shortness of breath. And oh yeah, it also causes a great deal swearing by the assailant.
Its' effects can last anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes giving you more than enough time to get away. It is perhaps the most effective self defense product you can use outside of the hospital.
Inside the hospital I would not recommend using it. Even though the spray from the Mace pepper gun is very accurate, wayward spray could affect patients or innocent bystanders. Inside the hospital, the pretender stun gun with 4.5 million volts of power that will put anyone down.
Don't fall victim to crime, especially when you're at work. Start defending yourself with some self defense products.
