Women and cosmetics have a long history going back thousands of years. Over the years many cosmetics have been made with toxic chemicals and women have died for their desire to look more beautiful. History has recorded the use of cosmetics back to the Babylonians about 6000 years ago.
Ancient Babylonians smashed gems to get the color they wanted to spread on their lips. Egyptians produced a purplish red lipstick using iodine and bromine. Another lipstick formula was carmine bettles crushed and then combined with ant's eggs to produce a red lipstick. The famous Egyptian Cleopatra would have painted her lips with this mixture.
Queen Elizabeth I introduced the makeup style of chalk white faces with red red lips.
Painting your lips in the 1700's could have gotten you burned at the stake. A law was passed in England because it was thought that women wearing cosmetics bewitched men into marriage.
Queen Victoria spoke against wearing makeup and during her reign, lipstick and other makeup was considered bad taste. In Victorian times it was important for a woman to adhere to Queen Victoria's rules if she wanted to be accepted in society.
Lipstick and other cosmetics were brought into the spotlight when movies became popular. Movie stars like Betty Grable and Gloria Swanson prompted women to wear lipstick on a regular basis. Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Arden started cosmetics line out of their salons ,the beginning of a long time business.
Styles have changed in the passing years. Although ingredients and colors have improved, the attraction of lipstick cosmetics remains the same as 6000 years ago.
