The Losers - These Characters Seem Pretty Cool, Why Are They Losers?

When I hear of a title like The Losers, I naturally imagine a plot along the lines of a group of high school misfits who, after four years of bullying and oppression, finally decide to take a stand against the jocks and cheerleaders who ridiculed them during their adolescence.
A plot that I don't think of, however, is an elite Special Forces team of beautiful, muscular CIA agents who, after being betrayed and left for dead by a corrupt member of the United States government, seek some justified vengeance by kicking a lot of ass and blowing all kinds of stuff up. Doesn't really sound like a bunch of "losers" to me. Actually seems pretty cool.
Regardless of my misconceptions towards the title, The Losers is in fact the name chosen for the upcoming film from Dark Castle Entertainment and Warner Bros. The film adaptation could be described best as a movie based on a comic book that was based on a comic book.
The original comic of the same name was published in 1970 by DC Comics and told the story of Captain Johnny Cloud and his contribution to an American Special Forces group in Europe during World War II. The story was then updated and re-imagined by Vertigo Comics (an imprint of DC) in 2003 and remained only slightly faithful to the original by substituting the All-American soldiers with badass CIA agents and instituting the revenge theme.
And now, because Hollywood made a rule that all successful to mildly-successful comic book franchises must be turned into a movie, The Losers makes its way to the big screen. The man calling the shots on the film was director Sylvain White, a relative new comer to the industry whose previous directorial efforts include Stomp the Yard and the forgetful I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.
The choice of White to direct had many fans of the source material worried because of his lack of experience with the genre, or any genre for that matter. Luckily, the positive buzz that has been garnered from early reviews and trailer reception has for the most part silenced the critics. The script White had to work with came courteous of writer/director/actor Peter Berg whose previous writing credits include Friday Night Lights and Very Bad Things.
In my opinion, what will make or break this film is the chemistry of the cast, which is headed by Jeffery Dean Morgan, an actor who has transitioned from dreamy Grey's Anatomy hunk to comic book action star flawlessly. His portrayal of The Comedian in last year's Watchmen was one of the main highlights of the film.
Portraying the rest of The Losers is Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Push), Idris Elba (Obsessed), Columbus Short (Armored), Oscar Jaenada and the ridiculously hot Zoe Saldana, whose resume is rapidly becoming very impressive. She starred as Captain Uhura in the reboot of Star Trek and used performance capture to play Neytiri in the mega-blockbuster that is Avatar. Jason Patric (Narc, Sleepers) rounds up the cast as Max, the corrupt government insider hell bent on killing The Losers.
It is interesting enough to note that The Losers was created with a PG-13 rating in mind, something that all parties were a part of in hopes of acquiring a younger, wider audience. The MPAA did in fact slap it with a PG-13 making it the first Vertigo Comics adaptation and film produced by Dark Castle Entertainment not be rated R. How this pans out is yet to be determined.
Something is still bothering me though. The Losers comic book from 1970 clearly defined why the characters called themselves "The Losers." Because each member of the Special Forces team was a commanding officer who all lost men under them to casualties and felt personally responsible, the deemed themselves "The Losers." Pretty simple.
But I can't for the life of me figure out why the good looking, incredibly skilled characters in this film or the comic book it's based on call themselves losers. They all seem pretty cool to me. I guess I'll just have to go see the movie to figure it out. It opens nationwide on Friday, April 23.

Communicating Or Just Making Pretty Shapes?

Do your prospects and customers find your messages hard to take in? It sounds crazy - but it happens most of the time.
Have you ever asked yourself why you communicate? Let's face it: unless, like a politician, you suffer from a constant need to bore other people, you must have a purpose.
Maybe it's to sell something: your product or service, or firm. Perhaps it's to make something happen, or prevent it happening. Possibly it's to clarify a misunderstanding or put over your point of view.
You may have many objectives. But whatever your purpose, I imagine you would agree it is, above all, essential that your audience understands what you are saying - quickly, easily and correctly. Otherwise, how are you to achieve your purpose?
Yet you may be surprised to know that many, perhaps most, printed commercial messages are ill understood by readers. The chief reason is that those who prepare them - writers and designers - know astoundingly little about what makes things easy to read.
For the most part, they rely on their own taste and judgment, or what is fashionable in "creative" circles. I put quotes round the word creative because, although the word implies originality, most slavishly follow whatever the current fad may be.
Slavish followers of fashion
Thus, if the fashion is for sans-serif type, or emphasizing words regardless of their importance, or using certain words or phrases - like "strategic" or "key issues", you will find many writers and art directors use them regardless of their suitability or how well they get your message across.
We can all have opinions about what we like, or what we think is tasteful, clever or well-arranged or visually exciting, but what really matters is, how well is your message conveyed? And oddly enough, a simple look at any daily paper reveals most of the principles.
The fundamental thing to recognise about words, type and layout is simple. They are tools to convey your message as clearly and quickly as possible. As the great typographical authority, Stanley Morison, noted: "Any disposition of type which, whatever the intention, comes between the reader and the meaning, is wrong".
As you will see shortly, if you rely on taste, opinion or fashion the result is often disastrous; but happily, two men devoted many years to discovering how better use of language, type and layout makes for better communication.
Decades of research
One was Rudolph Flesch, an American, who studied what kinds and arrangements of words, sentences and paragraphs are most easily read. The other, an academic at the University of New South Wales called Colin Wheildon, conceived the idea of learning not whether people liked or disliked certain layouts or type styles, but how well they communicated.
He did this by taking some 200 Australian consumers, getting them to read certain passages laid-out in various ways, then asking them to describe what they had just read. He also asked them how easy they had found a particular piece to read. In other words he wanted to know how well different layout styles and typographic styles worked from a practical, not an aesthetic point of view.
The original research took over two years. As far as I know it is the most extensive and thorough of its kind. It has been extended and repeated over the 20-odd years since, and came out three years ago in a full-length book with the title 'Type and Layout'*. I recommend it if you want to make sure that whatever your message is, it gets through as well as possible.
In addition, since all messages aim to elicit a response - either, "yes, I understand" or "yes, I will do what you ask," a lot of the results of direct response advertising can teach us lessons about what works and what doesn't.
This piece distills some of the main things that have been learned from these three sources but the principal lesson is clear: people's eyes and brains are lazy. If the eye has to adjust or make an effort, it will avoid doing so if possible. The same applies to the brain.
This should not surprise you: after all, how many business ideas - fast food, for example - succeed simply because people are lazy? First, let's look at what has been learned about layout and typography.
A page of copy in serif type was comprehended well by 67% of readers. When the same copy was reset in sans serif, the figures nose-dived to 12%.
Why? Because the little "feet" on a line of serif type help keep people's eyes on that line. So if you use sans serif type, make sure there's plenty of leading - space - between the lines.
Perceived legibility of a series of headlines went down by over 20% when the setting was changed from capitals and lower case to capitals only. Imagine what happens to comprehension when someone sets a whole page in "caps" - which is quite the rage at the moment.
The eye recognises shapes, not individual letters, and a word set in caps has no shape, whereas the descenders and ascenders in caps and lower case give a word shape. What are descenders and ascenders? Well, in the word "shape", h is an ascender and p is a descender.
Good comprehension slumped when type was set with ragged right setting (typically down from 67% to 38%) or, even more so with ragged left setting (67 down to 10 percent).
That's because the eye has to adjust constantly. Often people set long passages "centered" - ragged on both sides. What do you suppose that does to comprehension?
For the same reason constant changes in typeface are not only ugly but confusing. This also applies to the needless changes in type size so fashionable amongst advertising agency art directors.
At least one person in ten has imperfect eyesight. So copy in very small type is usually unwise. And type set over tints or textures or colours so that it does not stand out clearly is fatal.
* Type set in narrow columns is easy to read - the eye doesn't have to travel so far. Around 50 characters per line is about as long as it should go.
* Readers found headlines

of "decks" or layers
like this were hard
to comprehend.
56% said they found headlines of more than four decks difficult.
Visual elements that point out of the layout - like people's feet, or their sight lines - lead the readers out of the advertisement.
Illustrations that block off a column halfway down the page discourage the reader from travelling further.
Headlines marooned in the middle of the copy destroy the flow of that copy and halve good comprehension.
So do headlines placed under the copy. The reader can't be bothered to look up to the start of the copy.
Long, unbroken blocks of type are daunting. They should be broken up by crossheads, indents, and changes in type. Giving 'shape' to long letters also encourages readership.
* Huge headings take up expensive space you have paid for and only work if you have readers with arms 8 feet long.
When a lot of type is reversed out white on black, it kills response. In the case of one full-page magazine advertisement, response doubled when white on black was replaced with the normal black on white.
Captions are heavily read. If you run a picture without a caption, you lose the chance to communicate.
* Pictures of people's faces gain enormous attention. Use them wherever you can.
Techniques that make for easier reading
If you buy The Wall Street Journal you will see how surprisingly easy the front page is to read. That is because it follows the rules laid down by Rudolph Flesch.
Best sellers and tabloid newspapers adhere to these techniques, as do direct response copywriters. They all have to make reading easy. Otherwise they go broke.
Sentences should be short. An average 16 words per sentence is ideal. The easiest sentence to read contains eight words. The average reader finds anything longer than 32 words hard to take in.
Paragraphs should be short, containing just one thought in each particularly the first paragraph.
* However, vary sentence and paragraph lengths to avoid dullness.
Words should be short and lively, not long and dull: eg, buy, not purchase; free. Not complimentary.
* Never use unnecessary words: eg, "for free" should be "free"; "miss out on" should be "miss"; "male personnel" should be "men".
"You", "yours" and "your" should appear 2-3 times more than "I", "we", "our", "us" and "ours". That's because readers are interested in themselves - just as you are.
Use words and phrases at paragraph beginnings that encourage continued reading - like "And", "Moreover", "That is why" and "What's more". If you put questions at paragraph ends, this helps too. Why?
Because reader wants to know the answer - which is why you just read this sentence.
If you break sentences at the ends of pages and columns, this also encourages continued reading. Put 'Please turn over' or the like at the end of a letter page.

I am blessed with two boys and never had a sister. Pretty Woman - How It Could Have Been

Those who love movies will probably have seen "Pretty Woman" the better of the two movies which Richard Gere and Julia Roberts have made together. It's a simple fairytale story about a Hooker and a business man who fall in love over the course of a week. But "Pretty Woman" could have been a very different movie with not only Julia Roberts not being the first choice for the role of Vivian but also a few notable actors also considered for the role of Edward.
One of the actors who was a contender for the role of Edward was Christopher Reeve famous for playing "Superman". Now whilst was both a talented and often under rated actor I couldn't see him achieving the right level of chemistry with Julia Roberts. As it turns out Christopher Reeve didn't get the role as when he went to do a reading Julia Roberts wasn't available and so the cast director stepped in. Frustrated by the casting director's lack of professionalism Reeve ended up ripping up his script and walking out.
Another actor who was being considered for the role of Edward was acting legend Al Pacino. Like Christopher Reeve, Al Pacino went for a read through and was more fortunate to sit opposite Julia Roberts rather than the casting director. But Al Pacino ended up turning the role down and in the year which "Pretty Woman" was released Al Pacino would end up on the big screen in 3 movies "The Local Stigmatic", "Dick Tracy" and "The Godfather: Part III". Whilst I rate Al Pacino as one of the best actors he's just too intense for the laid back role of Edward and it would have changed the whole dynamic of the relationship if Edward was a more vocal and forceful character.
Christopher Reeve and Al Pacino were not the only actors considered for the role with John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone are also rumoured to have been on the list of actors to take on the role. In the end Richard Gere got it and whilst already a star thanks to hit movies in the early part of the 80s "Pretty Woman" most definitely gave his a career a much welcome boost.
Before Julia Roberts was chosen for the role of Vivian there was an impressive list of actresses who were being considered for the role. The list included Sandra Bullock, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kathleen Turner, Debra Winger, Kim Basinger, Sharon Stone, Heather Locklear, Kelly McGillis, Melanie Griffith, Joan Cusack, Emma Thompson, Carrie Fisher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Geena Davis, Rosanna Arquette, Elisabeth Shue, Tatum O'Neal, Phoebe Cates, Bridget Fonda, Diane Lane and also Madonna. As well as this already impressively long list Winnona Ryder, Jennifer Connely and Drew Barrymore are supposed to have wanted to play the role but were turned down as they were too young.
Whilst that in itself is an impressive list of actresses there were 3, Meg Ryan, Daryl Hannah and Molly Ringwald who were ahead of Julia Roberts for the role of Vivian. Although it is unclear why Meg Ryan turned the role down, it may have been that she had just starred in romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally..." and fancied a different challenge. As for Daryl Hannah well she is reported to have felt the role was "degrading to women" and declined the chance to star. Whilst Molly Ringwald was uncomfortable with both the script and playing a hooker, although years later she admitted to regretting turning down the role. Whilst I think Meg Ryan would have been a great Vivian and could see her having great chemistry with Richard Gere I can't say the same of either Daryl Hannah or Molly Ringwald, both talented actresses but wrong for the role.
But whilst "Pretty Woman" could have ended up with different stars taking on those now famous roles it could have been a completely different movie altogether. Originally the idea for "Pretty Woman" was to be a dark drama about a drug addicted prostitute living in LA who wanted to make money to go to Disneyland. As such the drug addiction element was part of the storyline between Vivian and Edward with part of the deal that she stay clean for a week. As it turns out the dark drama was changed into a fairytale romantic comedy but elements still remained. The drug element is still there with Vivian's room mate Kit using the rent money to buy drugs for herself and the fact that Vivian never does drugs is made very clear in an early bathroom scene.
So "Pretty Woman" as we know it could have been very different, in fact a whole different movie with a different storyline and different stars.

Podcasting How-To - A Pretty Good Podcast is All You Need

A pretty good podcast, or really a succession of pretty good podcasts, is all you need to attract an online audience. But just what does a 'pretty good podcast' entail?
First, let's look at how to make a podcast. A podcast is just creating MP3 files from your audios - it can be you reading an article, giving advice, teaching how to do something or an audio recording of a teleseminar or webinar you did. If you've been creating MP3 audios and putting them on your blog, you're already a podcaster whether you knew it or not.
So don't be frightened of becoming a podcaster, especially since you don't have to get it perfect - a pretty good podcast will see you through. Your best podcasts will be the ones that deliver the most information, information helpful to your target audience, irregardless of the quality of your MP3 audios.
Now that doesn't mean you should have a lot of background noise or poor recording quality - your best podcasts should be crystal clear and easy to understand. But creating a pretty good podcast can be done with the standard mic and headset combinations for computers, or even with the mic built into most laptops and netbooks these days.
If you need a podcast tutorial there are a lot of Podcasting 101 type of resources online, but really it's just a matter of recording the material you want and then uploading the audio MP3s to your blog or using an RSS feed to submit your podcast site to a podcast directory like Podcast Alley or iTunes.
But the main point here is it doesn't have to be perfect - you don't need fancy intros, background music, audio effects and the like - nor do you need to have that perfect 'radio voice'. As long as you speak clearly and don't have a heavy accent you'll be fine - or, of course, you can always have a friend, colleague or pro voiceover artist do the MP3 recording if you feel your voice isn't 'right' for your podcasts.
In general though, don't get too wrapped up in the technical side of RSS feeds, creating MP3 audios, building an RSS script, etc - focus on the content you deliver, and on delivering that helpful content on a regular schedule. As any successful podcaster can tell you, consistency is more important than the quality of your MP3 audios, as long as you're producing a pretty good podcast at the minimum.

Networking for Newbies - Making 'Pretty' Permalinks

If you've been following my articles on how to set up a WordPress blog, you'll now be ready to adjust a few settings, make your permalinks 'pretty' and have a general clean up. The WordPress dashboard can appear a little bit daunting when you first look inside, but you'll soon get the hang of it.
The first thing you need to do is to log into WordPress and go to your Dashboard. We're now going to tidy up your 'general settings' so scroll down the list on your left until you come to the word 'settings' and click on it - this opens you're 'general settings' page.
Here you need to enter your blog title, i.e. the name of your blog (mine is just 'Louise Marsden') and a tag line (what your blog is about), replace the default email with your current email address, fill in the rest as you require and click 'save changes'.
Go back to the 'settings' section left hand side bar and this time you need to scroll down a little look for the heading 'permalinks'.
[Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual blog posts, as well as categories and other lists of blog postings. A permalink is what another people will use to link to your article, or how you might send a link to your post in an e-mail message. The URL to each post should be permanent, and never change - hence permalink.]
Click on the heading 'Permalinks' and this will take you to the 'Permalinks Settings' page.
If you take a look at these permalinks you will notice that by default they look a little 'untidy' and 'unreadable' i.e.
http: // yourblogname/?p=123
 The search engines don't like them like this and it's not so easy for other people to see what they're about either so what you want is to make them look like this:
http: //yourblogname/yourpostname
Next go down to the button that says 'custom structure' - click on this. Now all you want in the box next to 'custom structure' is this:
/%postname%/
(exactly as I've typed it including the forward slash each side) so either take any text out of the box except this, (if there's already text in the box) or just enter it exactly as above - click 'save changes' - you'll now have 'Pretty Permalinks'.
You're finished with the 'settings' section for now so head over to the left hand side again and scroll up to the word 'Posts' - click on 'Edit Posts' - this opens your 'Edit Posts' page, here you'll notice that WordPress has kindly put the heading ' Hello World' as a welcome on your front page.
(If you haven't looked at your front page already, you can do this by just clicking on your blog title at the very top left of your dashboard)
All you need to do here is to click on 'trash' and that's it - your basic clean up is done - you're now all set to make your first 'blog post'.
